Banyan Tree
Interior- Space Diving Solution
Private Residence, New Delhi

The brief is to design the sliding door panels (both sides) between the living room and the dining room of a residential apartment. The door surfaces should be stylized with a graphic (tree of life) using brass inlay in wood. Tree of life as a visual imagery has been used extensively in interiors. In Indian history, the motifs of a tree can be seen in textiles, wall panels, murals etc. Almost every culture around the world illustrates a unique interpretation of a tree. Banyan tree is one of India’s ancient trees and has cultural and religious significance for people.  The roots of the tree grow and reach to the ground.  The installation aims to bring the ancient Indian form of a Banyan tree into a contemporary home by geometric stylization of the graphic and surface design using brass inlay. The space dividing system has been made by natural wood and the graphic of the tree has been hand crafted using brass inlay on the surface.

The challenge was to develop the geometric representation of the Banyan tree and develop a 3D surface on the wood.
