Buddha Jaali Wall
Art Installation – Wall
Ministry of External Affairs, New Delhi

The brief was to design an Art installation, which is inspired from Buddha for the office lobby space of the government building. This 6.5 meter indoor wall installation is representative of the abundance and spread of the spiritual teachings of Buddha. The placement of this installation is very appropriate for the entrance lobby of the office area. The jaalis depict the enlightenment and the intricacy of knowledge. The Jaalis have been meticulously handcrafted by Brass inlay artisans and is made in sheesham wood.

Buddha Jaali wall has a series of jaalis as petals to represent the spread of Buddha knowledge. At the concept stage, the ideation started with experimenting with different units of the petal shape and its arrangement with in the rectangular frame to develop a very graphic scheme for the art Installation. Since it’s a 6-meter high wall, it was important to create a visual balance as the petal sizes increase with the height. The installation consists of layers, with the framework being the back most layer, wooden Jaalis, then the 2-meter high Buddha form, and finally the 3 D brass lotus base. All the layers needed to be visually balanced and well integrated. A lot of research and development was done with brass inlay techniques to achieve the right visual quality of the inlay.

Working with new materials and production processes make us technically very sound and gives insight into the ground level problems of working with vendors, craftsmen’s and site contractors.
