Marble Diya
Outdoor Sculpture
Ministry of External Affairs, New Delhi

The marble diya is an art installation commissioned by the Ministry of External Affairs for the official building in New Delhi. The brief was to design a contemporary art piece with an Indian identity that represents the rich Indian cultural heritage. A diya as an Indian form represents prosperity and is used unanimously in every Indian home. The design intent is to represent craftsmanship and simplicity of the Indian form by placing the Art installation in the government building.

The marble diya has an origami inspired surface where each of the intersection is forming a 3D surface. It is blending an ancient form with modern surface detailing on marble. Extensive 3D planning and CNC processes were used to craft the 7-ton heavy art piece. The marble Diya is 1.4 meter high and 2.4 meter wide.

The geometric 3 Dimensional surface patterns inspired from a lotus and mapped as a surface skin on the Diya form.  Although the visual treatment is very nature inspired and simple but the design process to produce the marble piece is highly technical.

Marble as a material is so tactile and visually pure, and was just right for the art piece. It took a lot of research and development to understand the properties of the material and choose the right kind of marble to achieve the intricate geometric detail on the surface of the material and choose the right kind of marble to achieve the intricate geometric detail on the surface.

The process of scaling up an everyday object into an art piece using modern technology like CNC and achieving the complex geometry on the surface makes the Marble Diya unique as an Art Installation.
